Reflection
One of the biggest challenges that literature faces is the discussion over culture. What is considered it's own culture? Well many may argue that there are only certain groups with their own systems can have their own culture, but I believe that culture is everything that we look at. There are cultures represented in other cultures (i.e cultures within cultures within cultures). There is no single definition of culture that can portray it as a whole.
For my Literacy Ethnography project I chose to interview my boyfriend Ryan Elliott. The male culture is a culture that I am familiar with, and yet I am still and outsider. Even though this social group is outside of my own, I chose to take on this task. Growing up I didn't read many books where there were male characters. I always chose to read books with animals or girls as the main characters. There are books produced every day where the male culture if represented. Children's literature today has changed drastically since I was a child because there are more diverse books offered. I have learned a lot from this assignment, and i am glad I am able to share it with everyone. This assignment has taught me that a male dominated society provides many books with male dominate figures (main characters). Culture has influenced many people in the literature that we read as a child. While I was growing up I read books with girls as the main characters, and from my interview males tend to read more of the books with male main characters. I have also learned that while growing up kids do not tend to even consider that fact that the books they read are more towards a male perspective rather than that of a female perspective; they just read what they like, and like what they read. Ryan is the main definition of a male gender that we stereotype in today's society. He is very masculine and sporty. He is active and he has achieved great success within his career. Ryan is a Caucasian male who we classify as the dominant culture in America today. I have discovered that in literature many people find their own culture identity and share the same qualities as many of the books that they enjoy.
